CIC Response to Actions Taken During December ACIP Meeting

Another disappointing ACIP meeting concluded today.

After heated debates and intense confusion, the new ACIP committee members voted to remove the longstanding recommendation for Hepatitis B vaccine at birth, ignoring over 3 decades of data showing how the hepatitis B vaccine given at birth prevents lifelong infection, liver cancer, and early death. The reversal to risk-based recommendation takes us back to the 1980’s when thousands of vulnerable infants fell through the cracks and developed chronic infection. There is no cure.

Their new recommendation also calls for adding infant blood draws after each dose, despite lack of data on utility or feasibility of such a recommendation. Leading medical and patient advocacy groups joined forces to voice their strong objections.

The California Immunization Coalition joins professional groups across the country in denouncing the actions of the new ACIP members in their decision to remove hepatitis B recommendations, along with their subsequent discussion about the vaccine schedule which seeks to undermine public confidence in vaccines and calls into doubt decades of informed, scientific rigor by experts and millions of lives saved.

We are grateful to live and work in California where vaccine recommendations are based on guidelines from trusted medical professional organizations. Updates and guidance for California providers and families will be posted soon on the CDPH website.

Here are some excellent resources to help you answer questions from your communities:

  • A full review of the safety, effectiveness, and public health impact of universal Hepatitis B vaccination at birth can be found from the Vaccine Integrity Project.
  • Fact check of the ACIP meeting and recommendations on how to communicate the facts effectively from The Evidence Collective.

CIC and AAP-CA Welcome Governor Newsom’s Actions to Ensure Public Health for All

The American Academy of Pediatrics, California and the California Immunization Coalition are proud to support Governor Newsom’s announcement that will allow the California Department of Public Health to set its own vaccine schedules, listen to clinical and scientific experts, ensure that vaccines will be covered by insurance, and create liability protection for health care providers administering recommended vaccines.

Standing With Our CDC Colleagues

CIC Statement on Shootings at CDC Buildings on August 8, 2025

The California Immunization Coalition stands in solidarity with our public health colleagues and particularly, the staff members at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta following the horrific events that took place on Friday, August 8th. at the CDC Roybal Campus. News story from PBS News here.

A man who was reported to be experiencing mental illness and may have believed that the COVID vaccine had caused his illnesses, fired at least 180 shots at the CDC buildings along Clifton Road last Friday afternoon.

DeKalb County Police Officer David Rose was among the first to arrive on the scene and was killed by the assailant. We extend our deepest sympathies to Officer Rose’s family and the entire Atlanta area law enforcement community. (Rose Family GoFundMe here.)

We are devastated for his family and the CDC community, along with nearby Emory University and the surrounding neighborhood. As public health advocates we are united in supporting them and call for the Department of HHS  to take steps to ensure the safety of public health professionals and address the dangerous misinformation and unsubstantiated inferences that are leading to threats and violence.

The motto of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is “24 hours a day, 7 days a week, working to protect you and the entire community.”  The CDC staff work every day to protect the United States and beyond from diseases and health threats and they deserve respect and protection as well.
